Fumigation of vessels, barges and containers
Phosphine fumigation of grain and oilseeds at vessel, barge, container and wagon, by a GAFTA approved fumigator. For silos and warehouses inland, see silo fumigation.
All servicesOn a vessel, fumigation is done on completion of loading: we apply, seal, mark, brief the crew and leave the documents on board; the exposure takes place on the voyage. In a warehouse: sealing, exposure, ventilation, residual gas measured before anyone goes in.
What it covers
- In-transit fumigation of the vessel's holds
- Fumigation of barges, containers and wagons
- Coordination with the Master, the agent and the port authority
- Fumigation certificate and crew instructions
How it goes

- We agree the plan with the Master and the agent.
- We apply and seal.
- We hand over the fumigation certificate and the crew instructions.
What you receive
The fumigation certificate: fumigant, dosage, quantity, holds, date and time, exposure period. For the vessel: safety instructions and the notification for the discharge port.
Questions about this service
Can a vessel sailing in a few hours be fumigated?
Yes, in-transit fumigation is designed for that. Give us notice, so the team is at the berth when the last hold is closed.
Does it affect the quality of the grain?
Applied correctly, no. The gas dissipates on ventilation and is measured before re-entry.
